🚶‍♀️ Stronger Steps, Stronger Life: The Simple Move That Boosts Strength & Balance Over 40

ree

Have you ever paused mid-staircase and thought, “Wow, I used to fly up these!”?

You're not alone — and the good news is, there’s a simple move you can practise at home to build the strength, stability, and confidence that supports you through life’s ups (and downs).

This week, I’m spotlighting the Step-Up with Knee Drive — a powerful, functional move that strengthens your legs, fires up your core, and improves balance. Whether you’re hiking, gardening, carrying groceries, or simply navigating daily life with more ease… this one is a game-changer.

💥 Move of the Week: Step-Up with Knee Drive

This simple-yet-effective move mimics real-life movement patterns — and when you practise it with intention, it pays off in everything you do.

🌟 Benefits at a Glance:

  • 💪 Builds glute, quad, and hamstring strength

  • ⚖️ Improves single-leg balance and coordination

  • 🏃‍♀️ Boosts confidence in daily movement (like stairs and steps!)

🔁 How To Do It

Here’s a quick video of me demonstrating the Step-Up with Knee Drive. Whether you’re new to this move or ready to level up, seeing it in motion can help you feel more confident giving it a go.

✨ Make It Work for YOU

Whether you're just getting back into movement or feeling strong and ready to level up, there’s a version of this move for every fitness level:

🔹 Gentle Variations

  • Low Step-Up – Use a small platform or bottom stair.

  • Step-Up Only – Remove the knee drive to focus on control.

  • Supportive Hold – Use a wall or rail for balance.

🔸 Moderate Options

  • Tap & Pause – Tap the lifted foot lightly before stepping down.

  • Balance Challenge – Pause at the top for 2–3 seconds.

🔺 Advanced Progressions

  • Knee Drive + Press – Add a dumbbell press at the top.

  • Weighted Step-Ups – Hold weights for added challenge.

  • Power Step-Ups – Add a mini hop (only if your joints are happy!).

💜 Remember: It’s not about being the strongest — it’s about being consistent, supported, and safe.

💬 Why I Love It (And Why You Might Too)

This one’s a staple in my own routine and the programs I share with my clients — because it’s simple, effective, and doesn’t require fancy gear. You can do it in your lounge room, at the park, or even while watching TV.

👉 And when you train functionally, you’re not just “working out” — you’re preparing your body for life. That’s the kind of movement I’m all about.
