Move for Joy: Why Finding a Hobby Might Be the Best Thing You Do for Your Body

It doesn't have to involve a gym, a programme, or anything that feels like punishment.
Can I ask you something?

When was the last time you moved your body just because it felt good?
Not because your Fitbit guilted you. Not because summer's coming. Just because it was actually fun.
If you had to think about that for a bit, you're not alone.
Somewhere along the way, movement stopped being something we do for ourselves and became something we do to ourselves. A box to tick. Something we're either doing perfectly or failing at completely.
And honestly? That's exhausting.
Here's What Changes Everything
When movement gets connected to something you actually enjoy, everything shifts. Your energy lifts. You stop dreading it and start looking forward to it. You show up — not because you're disciplined, but because you actually want to be there.
For me, that thing is gardening.
Some of my best mornings start with my hands in the soil before I've even thought about a workout. Digging, planting, pulling weeds, hauling bags of compost — by the time I'm done I've squatted, lifted, stretched and moved in more ways than I can count. And I didn't once think of it as exercise. I was just doing something I love.

That's the magic of a hobby that moves your body. And movement you enjoy is the kind you'll actually keep doing — which makes it the most important kind there is.
What Could That Look Like for You?
Notice which of these gives you even a tiny flicker of oh, that sounds nice. That flicker matters.
💃 Social dancing — salsa, ballroom, line dancing. Moving with music and other humans is just genuinely fun. Full stop.
🏊 Aqua or ocean swimming — easy on the joints, brilliant for the mind. There's something about water that just resets everything.
🌿 Gardening — seriously underrated. Digging, hauling, squatting — your body's working hard and you're too busy chatting to your tomatoes to even notice.
🚶 Walking groups — fresh air, good company, actual steps. Barely feels like exercise when you're mid-yarn with a good friend.
🎾 Recreational sport — pickleball, tennis, social volleyball. The social side keeps you coming back without even trying.
🧘 Tai chi or gentle yoga — slow, intentional, and so good for women over 40. Balance, breath, body awareness. Underrated honestly.
Nothing jumping out? Think back to what you loved doing as a kid — before fitness became a whole thing. That version of you knew something worth remembering.
The Permission Slip
You're allowed to be wobbly. You're allowed to try something and not love it. You're allowed to show up once a week and still call it yours.

You don't have to go all in to get something out of it.
Small and consistent will always beat big and abandoned.
So, if you've been quietly curious about something — book the class. Say yes to the walk. Get your hands dirty. You don't need to be ready. You just need to start.
Your body deserves to feel good. Not just strong or functional, but genuinely, joyfully good.
Ready to Feel Like Yourself Again?

If any part of this resonated with you, that little nudge you felt, that hobby you've been putting off, that version of yourself you miss a little — let's have a chat.
I work with women (and men, too!) every day who are done with the all-or-nothing approach and just want to find what actually feels good for them. That's exactly what our first coaching call is for.
