The Pool Is My Classroom. Here's What It's Taught Me About Moving Well After 40.

Low impact. High reward. And something about the water that just changes everything.

I'm an aqua instructor so I might be a little biased here. But hear me out.

Swimming is one of the most underrated forms of exercise for people over 40.

I've spent years watching it quietly change how people move, feel and show up in their bodies.

And I mean years. There's a reason I keep coming back to the pool. And a reason I keep sending everyone else there too.

So, What Actually Happens to Your Body After 40?

Your body starts sending signals that it needs something different. Not less movement. Just smarter movement. The joints that used to bounce back overnight now need a bit more time. The high impact stuff that felt totally fine at 30 starts to feel like a tax that takes longer and longer to pay off.

That's not weakness by the way. That's just biology doing its thing.

And swimming is honestly one of the smartest responses to it I know of. Every time you move through water your body is working against resistance in every direction. Real strength, real cardiovascular work, real results — without any of the pounding that comes with running or high intensity training. Your joints get a break. Your spine gets a break. And your body still works hard enough to genuinely change.

Sore knees, niggly hips, a lower back that won't quit complaining? The pool is one of the best places you can be right now.

What It's Actually Doing to Your Body

Most people think of swimming as cardio. And yeah it is. But it's doing a lot more than that underneath the surface. Pun intended😂.

Every stroke works your arms, shoulders, core, back and legs at the same time. Full body workout, no equipment, zero joint impact. Good for your heart, your lungs and your overall fitness in a way a daily walk honestly can't match.

Years in and this still never gets old. 🌊

But the benefit that surprises people most? It's not just the fitness.

It's what it does to your head.

The rhythm, the breathing, the way everything else just disappears when you're in the water. Swimming drops cortisol, boosts endorphins and creates something close to a meditative state. A US Masters Swimming survey found nearly three quarters of swimmers said it helps release stress and tension. Three quarters. That's not a coincidence.

Haven't Swum Properly in Years?

That's fine. Genuinely fine.

You come for the workout. You stay for the people. 🌊

You don't need to be a good swimmer to get something real out of being in the pool. Walking laps in the shallow end counts. Aqua jogging counts. Kicking along with a kickboard counts. A gentle lap at a pace where you can still have a chat with the person in the next lane? One hundred percent counts.

The goal isn't to be fast or impressive. It's just to be in the water consistently and let it do its thing.

Start with two laps. Rest when you need to. Go at a quieter time if the crowd feels like a bit much. And if your technique needs a refresh, even one or two lessons can make a surprising difference to how much you enjoy it.

Two laps is a completely fine place to start. Infinitely better than zero and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

The Bit Nobody Really Warns You About

Here's the actual secret. The thing I've watched catch people completely off guard every single time.

It's how you feel when you get out.

There's a very specific kind of tired that comes after a swim. A good tired. Clear headed. Shoulders dropped. Everything feels just a little bit more manageable than it did an hour ago. Your body feels worked but not beaten up. Your mind goes quiet in the best possible way.

And once you've felt that a few times you stop going because you should and start going because you actually want to. That shift is where everything changes. That's the kind of movement that sticks. The kind that becomes part of who you are rather than something you have to talk yourself into.

The pool will be there when you're ready. And whenever that is, it's exactly the right time.

And if you'd love some support working out what movement actually fits your body and your life right now, let's have a proper chat.
